Kalani Pe’a wins his second Grammy

Maui singer-songwriter Kalani Pe’a won the Grammy for the Best Regional Roots Music Album at the 61st annual Grammy Awards show on Sunday.

It’s the second Grammy for Pe’a, who is still the only Hawaiian artist to have topped the category since it was created in 2012.

Pe’a earned the honor for his second album, “No ‘Ane’i.” His debut album, “E Walea,”won a Grammy in the same category in 2017.

After being in separate categories for several years, Hawaiian, zydeco, Cajun and Native American nominations were combined for the 2012 Grammys. Cajun and zydeco artists had won every year until Pe’a’s victory in 2017.

Also nominated in the category this year were Hawaiian band Na Hoa, for their album “Aloha from Na Hoa.” The band includes Ikaika Blackburn, Keoni Souza and Halehaku Seabury-Akaka.
